The busplaner Innovation Award is an international competition organised by the editorial team of the German magazine busplaner – one of the most influential industry publications in Europe. The readers – professionals, operators and public transport enthusiasts – choose the winners, which gives the award significant weight. In this year’s edition, the Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen took first place in its category.

ZERO-EMISSION POWER OF HYDROGEN

The main source of energy in the vehicle is hydrogen, which is converted into electricity by a state-of-the-art fuel cell – a mobile power plant installed onboard. The energy generated powers the drivetrain, ensuring quiet, emission-free, and efficient operation.

The Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen can carry up to 140 passengers, and offers a driving range of up to 600 kilometres on a single refuelling. Moreover, the entire refuelling process takes around 20 minutes – a key advantage in day-to-day operations.

HYDROGEN EXPANSION ACROSS EUROPE

The European hydrogen bus market is expanding rapidly, and Solaris continues to lead this growing segment. In 2024, Solaris hydrogen vehicles accounted for as much as 69% of all newly registered hydrogen buses across the continent. The Urbino 18 hydrogen can already be seen on the streets of Aschaffenburg, Cologne, Essen, Güstrow, Barcelona, and Wuppertal. In addition, several new contracts are underway to strengthen operator fleets in more than a dozen other European cities.

RECOGNITION THAT ENDURES

The busplaner Innovation Award 2025 joins a long list of awards received by Solaris vehicles from the magazine’s editorial board and readership. In previous years, models such as the Urbino 9 LE electric (2022, “Intercity Bus”), Urbino 15 LE electric (2021, “Electric Bus”), and Urbino 12 hydrogen (2019, “Concept Vehicle”) have all been recognised.

At Solaris, we not only keep pace with industry trends – we actively shape them, consistently focusing on innovation, sustainability, and a meaningful contribution to the future of public transport. Thank you for yet another recognition of our work!
