GALAȚI’S ECO-INVESTMENTS
IN PUBLIC
TRANSPORTATION
Galați, a port city on the left bank of the Danube in Romania, has been intensively investing in sustainable public transport for months. Earlier this year, we announced that the city ordered 40 modern battery-powered Urbino electric buses from Solaris. This order includes 20 Urbino 9 LE electric and 20 Urbino 12 electric models. The buses will arrive in Galati early next year.
40 SOLARIS ELECTRIC BUSES FOR ROMANIAN GALATI
With regard to the contract, we had the pleasure of hosting representatives of the city’s authorities at our company. Galați’s Deputy Mayor, Sorin Cristian Enache, shared the city’s motivation for transitioning to eco-friendly transport and future plans in this area.
ELECTRIC BUSES ARE PART OF AN AMBITIOUS PLAN FOR THE CITY
The city of Galați has set a goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. A key step along this green path is introducing electric buses into the city fleet.
The new buses will help reduce noise and lower pollution emissions, positively impacting residents’ health and comfort.
The Urbino electric buses heading to Galați will feature state-of-the-art solutions. Equipped with Solaris High Energy batteries with high energy density, these buses will cover long distances and can be charged both overnight at depots and quickly on routes – directly at stops. The batteries will be recharged via plug-in charging ports and inverted pantographs.
Passenger comfort will be enhanced by eco-friendly air conditioning with heat pumps, and safety will be ensured by the Mobileye Shield system, which warns drivers about pedestrians and cyclists in blind spots. The 9-meter buses can carry 59 passengers, while the 12-meter buses can accommodate 74 people.
ELECTRIFICATION OF MUNICIPAL FLEET – MORE TO COME
Galați’s commitment to fleet electrification doesn’t stop here – plans are underway to purchase hydrogen-powered buses. The authorities have already applied for EU funding to develop a hydrogen production and transportation system and to purchase 20 hydrogen buses.
Currently, 17 Trollino trolleybuses and 20 hybrid Urbino buses operate on the streets of Galați, soon to be joined by 40 Solaris electric buses. These purchasing decisions by city officials enhance residents’ daily quality of life and bring Galați closer to achieving full climate neutrality by 2050.
