FRANKFURT
ON THE HYDROGEN PATH TO THE FUTURE
Frankfurt, one of the largest cities in Germany, continues its journey toward zero-emission public transport. In recent weeks, the carrier In-der-City-Bus GmbH (ICB) has introduced another 10 hydrogen buses to its fleet, the Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen, making Frankfurt an even cleaner and greener city.
ANOTHER 10 SOLARIS HYDROGEN BUSES FOR FRANKFURT
A new batch of 10 new Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses have just started to operate on the city’s route 64. Residents of Frankfurt have been benefiting from Solaris hydrogen solutions since 2022 when 13 identical models began service on route M36. These modern hydrogen buses represent advanced technology, being a significant enhancement in the quality of life for the city’s residents.
The funding for the purchase of these new hydrogen buses came from the German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) as part of a support program for alternative propulsion systems in passenger transport.
HYDROGEN BUSES:
A KEY ELEMENT OF THE CITY'S GREEN TRANSFORMATION
ICB is consistently expanding its fleet of zero-emission vehicles. The hydrogen-powered Solaris buses feature modern technology and offer a guaranteed range of 350 km on a single refueling, making them an ideal choice for high-capacity routes. Refueling takes place at ICB’s hydrogen station, which was launched in May 2024.
One of the key advantages of the hydrogen technology offered by Solaris is short refueling time, allowing for a quick return to service. This makes hydrogen buses one of the most versatile solutions for urban transport.
BENEFITS FOR THE CITY AND ITS RESIDENTS
The introduction of the Solaris Urbino hydrogen buses has made route 64 entirely zero-emission.
The vehicles will reduce the city’s emissions by 640 tons of CO₂ and 8.4 tons of NOₓ annually.
Additionally, the quiet operation of the hydrogen vehicles improves the quality of life for residents, especially in the city center.
The modern buses are equipped with modern technologies that enhance passenger comfort and safety. Features include efficient air conditioning and advanced driver assistance systems, which contribute to both a more comfortable travel experience and greater road safety.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE – MORE HYDROGEN BUSES IN FRANKFURT
Frankfurt is committed to development in public transportation. By the summer of 2025, the ICB will expand its fleet of hydrogen buses by adding 18-meter articulated Urbino 18 hydrogen buses, which will operate on one of the city’s main lines, the Metrobus M32.
The Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen, awarded the title of Bus of the Year 2025, is one of Solaris’ most technologically advanced products. With its innovative and modular drivetrain, this bus can accommodate up to 140 passengers. Additionally, according to ESROT test the increased number of new lightweight hydrogen tanks allows for a range of up to 600 km on a single refueling.
With this purchase, ICB’s fleet will grow to 32 hydrogen buses, making it one of the largest fleets of its kind in Germany.
